When we schedule site visits and guest speakers in a given week, it's always interesting how the themes run together -- without specifically planning for that! On Thursday, Coach TJ Norrenberns, owner and operator of Betty Ann's Market in Mascoutah, Red Bud IGA and Millstadt IGA stopped in to spend the morning with Gateway CEO. We learned very little about the logistics of running a supermarket, but more so the history of family legacy and the leadership style that TJ uses in leading his team. TJ explained the difference in both real life - and running a business between a secular worldview and biblical world view. With secular, business is focused on money, profit and climbing the corporate ladder. In the biblical worldview, focus is on people first - developing, growing and mentoring. He gave examples of several large brands including Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a, Mary Kay and Bass Pro Shops that are highly successful and also have modeled their business according to a biblical world view.

Principles of TJ's business are based on God's word and it's how he chooses to lead his team over the last 35 years in a growing business. TJ provided students with the structure that he uses for his company and helped students see a side of leadership that has been very successful in a competitive market. Highlights:
-TJ came in sharing that he was not there to impress, but to inspire while sharing about his business. He chooses to model his role as owner as a humble servant leader.
-Each team member must commit to the structure that has been put into place when they accept a position at one of the stores. TJ freely shared these documents with students as solid examples that they can use if every needed within their own business.
-Their vision - to be the most Joyful, Prayerful, and Thankful Grocery Company on earth.
- Their mission statement - Focuses on Attitude - Team of Winners. Committed to valuing guests and providing exceptional service. Leadership respects the dignity and individuality of each team member. Serve God by serving valued guests and teammates.
-Their code of conduct - reflects 1 Corinthians Chapter 13. Highlights - Being Kind. Always perseveres. Does not complain. Has a positive attitude.
-Rating point system - Provides a bonus structure to every team member per quarter - no matter which level they serve within the company.
- Enthusiasm - It's TJ's favorite word! Nothing great was every achieved without enthusiasm. Allows ordinary people to do extraordinary things!

Thank you TJ for the new SNACKS that were shared and for all of the inspiration shared with our students!
